Despite the Fair Housing Act being on the books for more than 50 years, housing discrimination remains alive and well in America — and recent numbers show it’s actually getting worse. In 2022, over 33,000 fair housing complaints were filed — the highest number ever recorded — with most being handled by private fair housing organizations, not the federal government. Now, thanks to a recent court ruling, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development must release nearly $32 million in previously approved funds to help these organizations continue their vital work. Joining me now is Charlene Crowell, a national commentator on economic justice, to talk about what this ruling means, why these funds were withheld in the first place.
