Seattle, where most residents are renters and housing costs remain among the highest in the country, is seeking applicants to fill three open positions on the Seattle Renters’ Commission.
Created in 2017, the Seattle Renters’ Commission represents diverse renter voices from across the city. Its role is to provide information, recommendations and guidance to the mayor, Seattle City Council and city departments on issues and policies affecting renters.
The City of Seattle is currently looking for community members to fill one vacancy appointed by the City Council and two appointed by Mayor Wilson. To qualify, applicants must be renters living within the city limits at the time of their appointment and throughout their term. Commissioners serve without compensation, and meetings are open to the public.
The commission consists of 15 members: six appointed by the council, six by the mayor, two selected by the commission itself, and one young adult appointed through the YMCA Get Engaged program. As seats are filled, the commission prioritizes geographic representation and a broad range of experiences, including those of students, low-income renters, people with past felony convictions, residents of subsidized housing and individuals who have experienced homelessness.
